Old Kano's Farm Visitation
We had so much fun visiting Old Kano's Farm last January 24,
2014. We interviewed Mr. Joel Sotto who is the manager of the farm. We asked
him about their management in their farm. They are engaged in organic farming.
Organic farming is about using organic fertilizer as inputs. They are using the
manures of the animals being grown there like rabbits, turkeys and ducks. There
are also fish tanks where tilapias are being grown and they are using this to
water the plants. They are growing high valued vegetable crops such as arugula,
chives, lettuces, and different kinds of peppers, radishes, carrots, tomatoes,
parsleys, cucumbers and many more. They are using plants as their insect
repellants such as neems, rosemary, marigolds, chives and mints against harmful
insects. When there is occurrence of some pest, they are using hand picking
while if there is occurrence of disease, they are sacrificing a portion of the
plant just to avoid the spread of a particular disease. They have 24 farmers
working at their farm. A total of 1.2 hectares, having Zones A, B and C of land
located at Lalaan II, Silang, Cavite. They also have a total of 50 greenhouses
for their crops. Their produce crops are being brought at some hotels and
restaurants in Manila.
